IMBEWU South Africa
IMBEWU (meaning a “seed” in Xhosa language) is a non-profit, non-political and non-denominational NGO founded in 2001 through the encounter of people from South Africa and Switzerland. Its aim is to initiate and coordinate sustainable participative projects, working with local communities of the Eastern Cape Province to create conditions, which will enable children and youth from disadvantaged communities to envisage a future of equal opportunities and success. The activities of IMBEWU are currently benefiting more than 1’000 young South Africans, encouraging social empowerment and responsible citizenship through Educational, Health, Sports / Culture and Volunteerism Programmes.
IMBEWU is composed of two independent but complementary organisations. IMBEWU South Africa (SA) is based in New Brighton Township, Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth). It plans and implements programmes at a field level. IMBEWU-Suisse is based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. It supports its South African sister organisation financially and encourages global exchanges.

The RFF has been supporting IMBEWU's school and sports project since 2004. In 2008, the amount of CHF 175'000.- will facilitate primary school admission and education for 251 children to three schools in the New Brighton township and furthermore assist IMBEWU’s current institutional development. These are the planned measures for 2008:

- Improve the quality of schooling by offering teachers interesting, advanced training
- Fully cover the education costs of 60 children between 8 and 18 years of age
- Extension of a the school-project allowing around 200 children daily to play tennis, basketball and tennis
- A new track-and-field project is planned
- IMBEWU South Africa is evaluating the idea of organising a public arena in New Brighton for the 2010 soccer world championships
- IMBEWU wants to distribute the revenues over more sources and transform the nominative sponsorships into general ones

| Did you know: | South Africa’s first ever free, multiracial and democratic elections took place on 27 April, 1994, when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first black president, formally ending the white minority apartheid regime based on racial segregation. The wolrd’s largest rough diamond was found in South Africa (621.2 grams, 3106 carat). The stone was eventually given to King Edward VIII of England in 1907 as a present for his 66th birthday. Edward later split the stone up into 105 parts. |
