Natural School Playgrounds

Three years ago, the Roger Federer Foundation presented the concept of natural playgrounds to its partners in southern Africa. They were enthusiastic about the numerous advantages and piloted the first natural playground in the east of South Africa. In the meantime, outdoor spaces that are planned, built and maintained by the community with their own locally available materials, are part of all of our programs. There are currently over 4,300 natural playgrounds in Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In Switzerland, too, the Roger Federer Foundation 2020 launched a project that, in a first stage, is intended to provide 31 schools with a high proportion of disadvantaged children with a new natural playground on the school compound. In cooperation with our partners, we promote the distribution of the natural playground approach in Swiss schools. By 2025, the project intends to provide a total of 100 schools with a new natural playground. This project is being evaluated by a university. We hope that the study will provide facts about the quality and quantity of use of the natural play elements compared to classic children's playgrounds. Link for interested Swiss schools:
